At HKU, Faculty of Education is a great community of practice, offering us many opportunities for professional development. Some opportunities are, I believe you have participated in or heard of, students' confirmation of degree presentation, staff-led workshops, and invited talks by prestigious researchers. I would like to talk about two occasions in particular, one of which is the PRC conferences, and the other is the constituent research group.
During the four-year candidature, I presented at three annual PRC conferences, and each time, I learnt greatly. For example, in one presentation, I was talking about the relationship between teachers' beliefs, practices, the school culture, and the culture of learning in China in a context of implementing a new curriculum. One member of the audience asked me about the dynamics of the various factors. After the presentation, she approached me and recommended her new book on the topic, and the book had become a very important piece of literature for my PhD study. Some time later, she invited me to write a book review on the book, and the review was published, which was my first English publication, book review being a good start for most novice research students.
